Where did they live?

The Blackfeet people lived in Great Plains of North America since about 1700. They originally lived in the northeast and were known as a nomadic tribe that would migrate with the buffalo herds. The Great Plains are a flat grassland stretching from the Mississippi River west to the Rocky Mountains (Gibson, 2003, p. 1).

The traditional territory of the Blackfoot extended from Ponoka-si-sahta (Elk River, the North Saskatchewan River) south to Otahkoi-tah-tayi (the Yellowstone River). They lived along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains and eastward beyond Omahski-spatsi-koyii (the Great Sand Hills in what is now Saskatchewan). (The Blackfoot Gallery Committee, 2001, p. 5).

The Blackfeet moved frequently in order to not deplete resources in one area. They would follow the Buffalo as they would migrate throughout the land.

Today, the Blackfeet live in Montana and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.
