The Blackfeet Confederacy is the name given to four Native American tribes that lived in the Northern Great Plains. What started out as one nation, evolved over time into four distinct and independent tribes which consist of the Pikani or Piegan (including the Amsskaapipikani in Montana and Apatohsipikani in Southern Alberta); the Kainai (formerly known as the blood), and the Siksika (also called the Northern Blackfoot) (King, 2010, p. 6)

According to the 2000 U.S. census, the Blackfeet have one of the 10 largest American Indian populations in the U.S. which 27,104 people considering themselves Blackfeet (Gibson, 2003, p. 6).
