Blackfeet Today

The Blackfeet Indian Reservation is 1.5 million acres. On the north it borders the Canadian Providence of Alberta and to the south is the Glacier Country Tourism Region (Blackfeet Planning and Economic Development, 2015). The headquarters of the tribe are in Browning, MT. A statue of two Native American warriors next to their horses welcomes visitors as they enter the Blackfeet Reservation (pictured below).

Life on the Reservation

According to Gibson, 2003, unemployment is high on the reservation so many Blackfeet today live in towns and cities instead of on reservations (p. 35). To earn money for the entire Blackfeet Nation, the Blackfeet Tribal Business Council runs museums, gift shops, and rodeos for tourists. Additionally, in Canada, the Northern Piegan make clothing and moccasins and the Kainai operate a shopping center and factory (Gibson, 2003, p. 35).

Education is important to the Blackfeet. Gibson, 2003, discusses how in 1979, the Montana state government began to require all public school teachers on or near reservations to have a background in American Indian studies which helps non-Blackfeet people increase their understanding of the Blackfeet culture (p. 36).
